A 2016 Callaway C7 GT3.R and a 1990 C4 GT1 Corvette are the quickest of C1 through C7 Corvettes at the US Vintage GP at Watkins Glen
Chas Wicht # 7 from Sebring FL and Jeff Bernatovich # 90 from Brewerton NY were the quickest Corvettes, lapping the 3.4-mile circuit under the 1 minute 55 second mark to win 10GT4 and 10GT2. Wicht won Group 10 overall against 21 cars including some nifty historic NASCAR Chevies, Fords and Mopars.
11 Corvettes filled more than half of Group 6/12a and captured the most eyeballs. In a stellar performance, Jody O’Donnell # 46 from Dallas TX in his 1969 SCCA AP C3 big block Corvette was first overall, turning laps in the 2 minute 2 second range to win the Dick Mooney Memorial race on Sunday.
Alan Sevadjian, also from Dallas was equally fast in Clair Schwendeman’s # 37 1968 SCCA AP C3 big block Corvette but did not start.
Cord Kisthardt # 21 from Hershey PA came next in the 2 minute 4 second range, winning Group 12a featuring newer cars like his 2002 Z06 SCCA T1 C5 Corvette.
Jeff Lyman # 77 from Central Square NY, # 39 Martin Hosek from Salem NH and # 16 John Shannon from Oswego NY led the C6 contingent in their SCCA GT2 2008, 2011, and 2007 Corvettes, turning laps in the 2 minute 5 second range.
Jim Glass # 11 1965 BP Corvette from Kingston NY and Jim Heck, # 64 1964 BP Corvette from Findlay OH led the contingent of small block Corvettes ny turning laps in the 2 minute 11 second range.
Matt Lituchy # 3 1965 BP Corvette from San Francisco CA and Dan Lipetz # 14 1968 from Vancouver BC FIA big block Owens Corning replica were also in the hunt, fresh after appearing at Lime Rock Park HF43 a week earlier.
Ray Zisa # 4 1990 C4 WC Corvette from Kensington CT also raced at Lime Rock and won his class in Group 12.
Dick Payne and his # 77 1970 SCCA AP Corvette from Califon NJ were a bit off the pace but were honored in August at the Corvettes of Carlisle Racer’s Reunion.
Gordon Gardner # 37 1972 SCCA AP ex-Fred Kepler Corvette from nearby Horseheads NY took part in practice but did not start either race.
Bill Schwacke # 55 1955 SCCA BP Corvette from West Chester PA was bested in Group 4 by surprise visitor Randall Green from Wayzata MN and his sleek # 66 1958 SCCA CM Echidna Corvette Special.
Frank Morelli # 3 1961 SCCA BP Corvette from Evanston IL settled for 4th in class.
