Patrick Byrne leads the pack at the 2025 Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion (RMMR)

This late August event, originally promoted by the legendary Steve Earle, has been a fixture since 1974 at Laguna Seca, the iconic 2.3-mile track just outside Monterey, CA.   Among some 383 entries, 15 Corvettes ranging from C1 1958 to C4 1987 stood out in three separate production car groups.

# 17 Patrick Byrne, a semi-pro driver, finished 3rd in the the Ken Miles Sixties GT Trophy race among 37 production sports cars in the third contest on Saturday.  As in the days of old, his 1963 split-window Corvette was a bit too heavy to catch the winning 289 Cobra driven by none other than Jim Farley, the globe-trotting, history-loving CEO of the Ford Motor Company.

# 3 Matt Lituchy finished 7th, some 5 seconds off the pace in a 1965 roadster that began life in the 1990’s with a vintage racer named Steve George.  It later fell into the hands of Jorgen Moeller from Salt Lake City who turned it over to the now famous Dave Kindig of Kindig design who fitted the cage and a flashy gold and charcoal-grey paint job.

# 73 A.C. D’Augustine 1965 roadster finished 8th followed by # 161 Nick Colona 1967 coupe 10th and # 76 Steve Yarborough, 1966 coupe 11th.

# 74 Ricardo Price, 1964 roadster finished 12th ahead of # 31 Craig Carter, 1964 roadster 13th and # 151 Michael Green, 1963 roadster 16th.

Hats off to # 58 Ed Hugo who finished 22nd in his 1958 roadster, the only straight axle Corvette and sadly, a vanishing breed in vintage racing.

# 8 Del Hardy, 1963 coupe and # 7 Jay Parille, 1966 coupe did not make the start.

# 40 Patrick Byrne finished 2nd in the Peter Gregg IMSA, AAGT, GTX trophy race among 39 cars in the 9th contest on Friday.  His 1977 Corvette was originally raced by R.V. Schulnberg, a scrap dealer from Tampa, and was equipped by subsequent owners with wide-body fenders produced by John Greenwood.

# 48 Matt Johnson finished 18th in this 1969 Corvette that began a modest life in SCCA B Production, with the late John Carusso.  Carusso’s friend and Corvette legend Fast Phil Currin drove the car for many years in IMSA GTO, ending with this look.

# 47 Gregg Johnson (no relation), finished 31st in this 1969 Corvette that still retains the look of the “Orange Blossom Special” that Bob Gray and Terry Keller raced at Sebring in 1972 & 1973.

# 5 John Goodman finished 15th in the Hurley Haywood IMSA GTO, GTP, TA Trophy race among 32 cars in the 10th contest on Friday. This 1987 beauty has a C4 Silhouette body on a tube frame chassis built by Protofab, a company founded by Charlie Selix and Gary Pratt.  Pratt went on to found Pratt & Miller, now part of the Osh Kosh Corporation that fields two C8 Z06 GT3.R race cars in the IMSA Weather Tech Sports Car Series.
