Nineteen Corvettes stand out at the 2025 WeatherTech Vintage Weekend at Road America
This mid-July event, hosted by Brian Redman, has been a fixture at the 4.1-mile track just outside Elkhart Lake WI going on thirty years. Among some 383 entries, 19 Corvettes ranging from C1 1956 to C7 2016 stood out in three separate production car groups that were classified further by displacement, weight, etc.
Pierce Marshall in his # 3 2016 C7 IMSA Corvette cleaned up against 34 cars in Group 9 for modern GT cars, clocking a fast lap of 2 min. 5 sec.
Avery Stuckart in his # 23 1956 Corvette finished 2nd in class in Group 3 for older cars.
Jody O’Donnell # 46, (class winner) Rick Mooney # 42 (class winner), Clair Schwendeman # 37 and Sam LeCompte # 167 turned laps in the 2 min. 22 sec. range in the hotly contested 41-car Group 6 for 1960s to 1970s Big Bore Production cars.
Travis Pfrang # 51, John Anderson # 37, and Harry Dinwiddie # 73 were in the 2 min. 27 sec. range.
Mark McIlyar # 33, Brian Morrison # 76, and Cooper DuBois # 86 were further back in the 2 min. 36 sec. range. Road America was a “Bucket List” event for McIlyar (from Dallas TX), for Anderson (from Yorba Linda CA) and DuBois (from Portland OR).
It was “wait until next year” for Trent Thompson # 9 and Evan Pecore who qualified but did not make the start.
Chas Wicht in his 2016 in his # 7 2016 Callaway C7 GT3.R Corvette won the GT2 class in Group 9.
Rick Dittman # 24 and Rocky Elli were 5th and 7th in GT1, about 5 sec. behind overall winner Pierce Marshall, see top.
Bill Treffert, a regular in his # 24 1960 Corvette had an “off weekend” while Jim Shanel, doing his first vintage race, cautiously felt his way in this # 16 1957 Corvette being restored from when it last appeared in 1966.
Vintage racing Corvettes still appear in double-diget numbers at “Destination” events staged by tracks at Road America and Laguna Seca. Numbers are falling off in SVRA at Sebring and HSR at Road Atlanta. Our eyes are focused on SVRA Watkins Glen in early September and CoTA in early November.
