Hopes ride on the # 70 Callaway C7 GT3.R in SRO GT America
Corvettes absent and now returning to the SCCA Pirelli World Challenge (now known as SRO GT America) is never a bad thing.
Virginia International Raceway (VIR) was the third event on the schedule where Mirco Shultis raced his # 70 Callaway C7 GT3.R Corvette vs a field of foreign marques like Audi, Mercedes, Ferrari & Lambo.
After a disappointing 8th in Saturday’s race, he finished 4th on Sunday, two places back and 3.5 seconds shy of legendary Corvette driver Andy Pilgrim in his # 56 Ferrari 458 Italia GT3.
Some fans might argue that the C7 GT3.R Corvette is not truly American. They were built in Leingarten Germany starting in 2015 and share no parts in common with C7s manufactured in the US. It’s a highly engineered Corvette race car in every respect, and an exotic nonetheless, coming from Ernst Woehr of Callaway Competition, a long-time partner of Reeves Callaway.
Callaway Competition in Europe (ADAC-GT series); and Callaway USA seem destined as prime candidates for the new Corvette C8 GT3.R customer cars.
Having reviewed a recent GM survey and questionnaire addressed to teams far and wide, it’s not far-fetched to expect Andy back in a Corvette.
The race winner both days at VIR was George Kurtz in his # 04 Mercedes-AMG GT3.
We’re looking for Mirco Shultis and the # 70 July 16-17 at Watkins Glen as well as ongoing development of the C8 GT3.R customer cars.
