Corvettes score at HSR’s 38th running of “The Mitty” at Road Atlanta
# 46 Jody O’Donnell topped a 36 car field of Mustangs, Camaros, Porsches, Corvettes, BMWs and Jags in Group 5 for large displacement production sports cars manufactured through 1972. (comparable to SVRA Group 6)
# 33 Mike Donohue took 2nd overall and first in class sporting a hood with a noticeable bulge, ostensibly to clear a new intake manifold. (maybe we’ll get a peek at the set-up later in the season)
# 26 Pete Kirill finished 2nd overall in a Derhaag-bodied C5 against 12 other entrants in Group 9 for GT1, Trans-Am and IMSA tube frame type cars. (clean looking)
# 48 Harry Dinwiddie’s IMSA GTO is a beauty to behold. In 1972 the late John Carusso had this car built to go club racing. John’s finances improved when he became the southeast distributor for Sanyo and later BASF products. Starting as a small block roadster in SCCA B Production class, the car was converted for endurance racing by swapping in a big block motor and taking on the iconic look of a C3 Pro IMSA GTO - Greenwood fenders, the latest fixed headlight set up, fat rubber and all. History added up with John, Lynn St James who was his wife at the start, Phil Currin and others driving the car over a full schedule of races through the mid-eighties. Harry kept an eye on it, tracked it down and with help from his friends put in the effort and money to bring it back to its final IMSA appearance.
# 59 Bernie and Adam Chodosh raced this straight axle they shipped over from the UK with a motor listed at 6,500 cc.
Race Results and thank you Larry VanScoy for your great photos
