Engine: A production based, sealed and equalized L98 power train (5.7 liter V8, rated at 270 HP) was specifically built for the Challenge by the Flint engine plant and then tuned and sealed for equal performance by Specialized Vehicles, Inc. in Troy, Michigan. These engines (with matching VIN #’s) were installed on the production line at the Corvette assembly plant at Bowling Green, KY. The cars also featured a straight pipe dual exhaust with Flow Master mufflers provided by Desert Driveline Exhaust. Some cars received replacement engines during the racing season.
Driveline: Transmission/Other: Doug Nash 4+3 manual transmission four-wheel disc brakes. Wheelbase: 96.2" All 1989 Corvette Challenge cars came with the Z61 Performance Handling Package, which included the new FX3 Selective Ride and Handling system and heavy-duty springs and stabilizer bars.

Modifications: All 1988 Corvette Challenge cars were given the B9P option code. They came with the Z51 Performance Handling Package which included heavy duty springs and sway bars, AC3 six-way power driver seat, UU8 Delco Bose stereo, Z6A side window and side mirror defroster, and 24S blue-tint or 64S bronze-tint glass removable roof. Additional “Challenge” preparation consisted of necessary safety equipment (roll cages, racing seats and fire-extinguisher systems and safety belts), a set of Bilstein shocks and four Dymag wheels. This race conversion work was performed at the Protofab Inc shops in Wixom (MI).
