Notes/Race History: Two cars were developed for the IMSA endurance races at Daytona and Sebring, in cooperation with GM Development group. The impetus to develop these cars was two-fold. First, they could serve as test beds for new parts, for the upcoming Corvette ZR1. And, second, based on the success that Corvettes had experienced in SCCA Showroom Stock, there was a good chance that the cars could perform well in IMSA endurance series as well. The two cars entered in the Daytona and Sebring races in 1987 were evolutions of the 1986 cars. Number 88 was more modified than the # 87 car. After running the two premier IMSA events, the cars were then entered in the SCCA World Challenge series. The cars ran only once, at Nelson Ledges (Brainerd/MN). At this point, it is presumed that the main features of the 1988 Corvette had been locked-in and the further expenditure of development money might have been considered un-necessary. Interestingly, 1987 was the last year for Corvettes in the SCCA showroom stock series. Because they had been so dominant for several years rules changes were introduced to ban them from this series. Most Corvette owners shifted over to the Corvette Challenge series.
