This is one of two ZO6 Corvettes delivered to Mickey Thompson, a California Tuner that had ties to GM.  A specially built big block motor was installed for Doug Hooper to race at the Daytona Continental on Feb 17, 1963.  GM had withdrawn from racing.  There was no explanation that this motor existed.  Tom McIntyre found the car and bought an exact spare motor at an auction of Smokey Yunick's property.  Tom owns the car which was the cover story for Hot Rod Magazine and was featured at SEMA.  More details:  http://registryofcorvetteracecars.com/ee/index.php/site/view_cars/56

Built to ZO6 specs by John Bushell.  Driven by Don Yenko and Doc Wylie at Nassau, Daytona and Sebring.

When the 396 cu in big block was introduced in March of 1965, Herb Caplan from CA was one of the first to order one to compete in SCCA club racing.

Grand Sport Chassis 002 (and 001) were left to languish and converted to roadsters.  In 1966 GM found it cheaper to off load them to Roger Penske for the asking.  He installed big block engines and gave one to his good friend George Wintersteen to race.  As a limited production model it had no chance competing against prototypes and modifieds.  By mid-season George retired it.  The car passed through the hands of collectors but miraculously has been preserved as is.  Circumstances favored Fred Simeone whose foundation now owns and displays it among his legendary collection at his Philadelphia museum.  It is the centerpiece and draws crowds for an event each October co-hosted by Doug Fehan of the Corvette Racing Team.  The car is kept well maintained and in running order.  More details: http://registryofcorvetteracecars.com/ee/index.php/site/view_cars/411

At the end of 1965 when Roger Penske needed to borrow money to buy a coveted Cheve dealership, his bank required him to give up driving.  At age 28 he formed a racing team and quickly found sponsorship from the Sun Oil Company.  Using his connections with Chevrolet he ordered this race optioned (heater delete) L88 big block Corvette.  At Duntov's recommendation he hired standout CA racer Dick Guldstrand to fly to St Louis pick it up the car at the factory and drive it to his Philadelphia shop in the dead of winter.  Guldstrand helped prepare the car.and co-drove it with George Wintersteen and Ben Moore to class wins at Daytona and Sebring.  Kevin Mackay of Corvette Repair later acquired it from the late Dale Phelon, a wealthy scion. CA dealership Dana Chevrolet owned by Peyton Cramer ordered this L88 and entered it at the 1967 Le Mans 24 hour race.  The drivers were standouts Dick Guldstrand and Bob Bondurant also from CA.  Since 1960 a Corvette had not been raced at Le Mans.  The stuff of legend, this car captured the fancy of the French and was very down the long Mulsanne straight.  Unfortunately the engine blew up with several hours to go.  Car restored,  now owned by high profile collector Harry Yeaggy.  More details:    http://registryofcorvetteracecars.com/ee/index.php/site/view_cars/650

Cliff Gottlob, a mechanic from KS built this big block roadster on a shoestring budget.  Preservationist David Burroughs, noted restorer, collector and co-founder of Bloomington Gold tells the story how Gottlob and his tiny team persevered "Against All Odds" to finish 11th overall in the 1970 24 Hours of Daytona.  Burroughs and co-owner Dana Mecum purport the car is original down to the last nut and bolt.  The car has been displayed at Pebble Beach, Amelia Island and Bloomington Gold.  More details:  http://registryofcorvetteracecars.com/ee/index.php/site/view_cars/579

Lou D'Amico, co-owner of Alto Corvette repair shop in Lynbrook NY turned a salvaged 1963 coupe into a club racer.  Exporters Udo Horn and Fred Mullauer from MD discovered and restored it years later.  The car has been raced in the UK by John Young at the prestigious Goodwood Revival.  More details:  

Dave Gregrino from Charlotte found and restored this 1965 roadster that Mike Hansen raced in SCCA GT1 in MD & VA.  The car appeared by invitation at Gordon McCall's Monterey Air Park show in 2015.  Recently displayed at PVGP in 2017.
